| Employers
say that the worst thing you can do is to come
to an interview unprepared. Here are some tips
to help prepare you for the BIG day. |
|
| Read
up about the company in advance |
| |
| It
is always good to learn more about the
company before the interview, eg, its
products/services, vision and mission,
how it is organised, etc. You may get
information about the company from its
annual report, newsletters, or its internet
website. |
| |
|
|
| Arrive
on time |
| |
Plan
ahead : find out where the company is
located, how to get there, and how long
it will take to reach there by bus/MRT.
Always arrive earlier than the appointed
time by about 15 - 30 mins as you may
be required to complete an application
form.
If you are unable to attend the interview,
inform the person-in-charge beforehand.
|
|
|
| Bring
along your documents |
| |
|
Remember
to bring the following items for the
interview :
- identity
card
- educational
certificates
(technical certificate, GCE
'O' or 'N' level certificate,
academic transcripts, report
book)
- ECA
records
- a
copy of your resume
(this will come useful when
you are required to complete
an application form just before
the interview.)
|
|
|
|
| Dress
appropriately |
| |
| Wear
appropriate clothings for the interview.
Long-sleeved shirt, trousers and shoes
will be suitable for guys. For girls,
skirt-and-blouse combination or dress
and shoes will be appropriate. |
| |
|
|
| Introduce
yourself in a courteous manner |
| |
Greet
the interviewer(s) and any other persons
in the interview room with a warm smile.
Give a firm but not bone-crushing or flimsy
handshake. |
| |
|
|
| Listen
and answer questions carefully |
| |
Listen
carefully to the questions asked and ask
for clarifications if you do not understand
the questions.
Answer only when the interviewer has completed
his question.
Answer to the point and speak with conviction.
Speak slowly and clearly. |
| |
|
|
| Use
body language to show interest |
| |
Sit
up straight and do not slouch in your
seat.
Smile and nod when the interviewer is
talking or explaining something to you.
Maintain eye contact with the interviewer
at all times. |
| |
|
|
| Avoid
giving unnecessary information |
| |
|
| |
- Avoid
mentioning any personal or financial
problems, as the interviewer is only
interested in how you can contribute
to the company.
- Avoid
criticising your previous employer
or colleagues as it reflects badly
on yourself.
|
|
|
| Ask
about the next step in the process |
| |
| Check
with the interviewer when you can expect
an outcome of the interview, and if there
will be another round of interview. |
| |
|
|
| Thank
the interviewer |
| |
| Give
the interviewer a firm handshake and thank
him/her for the time. |
