 JOB TIPS : TELEPHONE STRATEGIES

You are interested in applying for a technician job in a well-known multi-national company. You wish to call up the company's personnel to find out if there is any job opportunity, and if so, to get yourself an interview. How should you go about with it? The trick is to plan ahead. Write down what you are going to say, the questions you wish to ask, and practise with a friend or family member. And remember - your objective in making the call is to try to get a job interview. A suggested strategy for getting an interview through the phone is given below.
Find out who to speak to about the job

Call the switchboard or receptionist to find out who the best person to speak to about the job is. He/She could be a human resource officer or manager, or a supervisor on the job. Take down the name, designation and contact number of this person.

 Identify yourself

"Hello, good morning, Mr Tan. My name is John."

Tell the person who has referred you to him

"Mr Lim Chin Toh suggested that I give you a call."

State the purpose of your call

"I would like to apply for a technician position in your company and I thought you might be able to help."

If you find that you have been given the wrong contact, ask the person for other people who might be able to help you. Again, write down their names, designation, and contact number, and make the call again to the appropriate persons.

If the person in charge is busy when you call, ask if you can call back. Get the specific time and day from him, so that he will be free to speak to you when you return the call.

Ask for permission and time for a conversation

"Is it alright for me to come to see you tomorrow, so that we could talk more about this? I would like to find out more about what the job requires."

If the person in charge informs you that the company does not intend to recruit at the moment, offer to call back time to time to find out if there is any vacancy. Better still, inform the person that you would like to hand deliver your resume to him personally for consideration in future recruitment.

Make an appointment to see him to pass him your resume. Remember, your objective is to have a chance to talk to him.

If the person agrees to meet up with you but specifies a time-slot where you have a movie appointment with some friends, agree to the meeting, and then re-schedule your appointment with your friends.

Summarise the call and thank the person for his time and support

"So I shall see you at 10 tomorrow morning then, Mr Tan. Thank you so much for your time."
